Synapse is a term used in Neurology, defining the space from which nerve cells connect to transfer information from one cell to the next.  Synapsisfrom Greek means to fasten together, to join, or to connect.  Synapses, is an exhibit that explores the deep interconnectivity between artists that belong to a small community, The Gowanus Swim Society art collective.  Each member of the Swim Society, (which are often referred to as Swimmers) experience and translate connection through their individual processes and work. Connection is explored in this exhibit through multiple forms of media and themes, including site specific installation, drawing, design, and video art.  The relationship between the Swimmers of GSS and their work illustrates the connections they have with each other both consciously and subconsciously as one of the many outcomes of being a part of a closely tied art community.

Gowanus Swim Society is a Brooklyn based art collective that formed in the art studios along the Gowanus Canal in 2014.  The collective meets regularly to provide a forum for sharing information, artist resources, and support.  The Swim Society works together to accomplish common goals, hold one another accountable for personal progress through group critiques and acquires new skills from one another.  As part of the collective, GSS also hosts public social events, exhibits together regularly, and organizes art markets.  They are always eager to collaborate with other artists and organizations to work towards common goals while creating a fun and welcoming environment.
